8 Winter Clothes for Baby

Discover the 8 essential clothes to dress him in winter. In addition to baby’s main outfit, you’ll need to wrap him up properly, so he doesn’t catch a cold in winter! Baby is fragile and fears the cold, so think about it and choose to cover him adequately and avoid colds.

1. The long sleeve bodysuit

In the cold season, baby needs to cover himself like his parents, except at the beginning, when they are not yet very mobile, an extra layer is necessary.

In winter, prefer long-sleeved bodysuits to short-sleeved ones. Choose them with a soft and comfortable material, preferably 100% cotton, with snaps at the buttocks or in the back so that you can fully open them from the front.

Good to know: Covering him well in the winter doesn’t mean covering him too much! Physical signs of hyperthermia in babies include a sweaty neck, sweaty armpits and hands, a red face, and hot, red fingers and toes.

2. The top

Between a sweater and a vest, it’s best to put a vest on your newborn to avoid putting clothes over his head. Moreover, if baby is too hot, it will be easier to take off the vest without handling him. Prefer vests in a soft material, slightly stretchy and easy to care for.

As for woolens, they can also be perfect anti-cold allies, of course, if they don’t sting… otherwise, beware of protests!

Good to know: as a general rule, you should put an extra layer of clothes on your baby compared to an adult because baby doesn’t move (or moves much less than you) and can get cold very quickly.

3. A cap

His thermal regulation system is not yet mature, so baby is much more sensitive to cold and heat. Think of covering his extremities well: head, ears, fingers. Keeping an infant’s head warm is vital. For children under three months of age, it is through the top of the skull that the body cools down. Therefore, keeping them warm is essential to avoid hypothermia. So, for winter outings, think of covering his head with a cap to hide his fragile ears from the cold.

Choosing a headgear is not improvised during his first year. Take cotton or natural light fiber (linen, bamboo, wool, or even silk) to allow the skin to breathe better. A little long, so you can reverse it for a better fit on the head.

Good to know: natural fibers such as cotton and soft wool will keep baby warm while allowing his skin to breathe.

4. Mittens

Another winter essential: a pair of mittens! Baby’s hands are fragile, so mittens are better than gloves because you’ll have a more challenging time putting them on him since his fingers are so tiny. As for the cap, it is up to you to judge if baby needs it!

The most comfortable and practical mittens are those made of fleece because the material is soft and warm; they are held together by a tie to be slipped into the sleeves of his coat or wetsuit so that he doesn’t lose them!

They have elasticated cuffs.

Good to know: even when dressed appropriately for winter, babies often have cold hands, which is quite normal.

5. Soft shoes

Only for outings and not when baby is at home, think of protecting his little feet from the cold by slipping them into soft shoes, slippers, and thick socks.

For babies who can’t walk, there’s no need to put them in authentic shoes. Prefer small shoes, soft, stuffed, or simple socks, with a large opening (to slip your toddler’s feet in) easily.

Good to know: if the baby is cold, his nails will turn blue, and his cheeks will lose color.

6. A sleeping bag

It’s called a sleeping bag, and for the night, it’s ideal before two years old, because attached by snaps, baby can’t remove it himself. Therefore no risk of the baby uncovering himself. Moreover, it is much less risky than a blanket with which he could suffocate, not having the strength and reflexes necessary to get out of it if necessary.

Warm and thick, the sleeping bag has several advantages. It replaces the blanket, ensures a constant temperature, does not hinder the freedom of movement, and is easy to open with snaps or zips.

Attention: the sleeping bag mustn’t be too big for the baby. Indeed, he must not be able to slide inside, so you must make sure that the straps are well adjusted so that the head of the child is always outside the sleeping bag.

Good to know: some sleeping bags also have sleeves! Some even have fleece sleeves to fight against the cold.

7. Thick pajamas

In a room at 19°C, ideally, the baby must be surrounded by softness and warmth to spend a good night. For cozy nights, nothing is better than a baby pajama, also known as a sleeping bag. Pajamas are the ideal sleepwear from birth to two years. They are practical and cover the child from neck to toe.

Avoid putting on thin pajamas in winter. Prefer them thicker in fleece or velvet touch; with an opening on the front or the back and legs; not too tight, for example, with elastics at the wrists and ankles (which may mark his skin).

8. A suit

A jumpsuit is a perfect garment to face the rigors of winter, as it combines a coat and pants without the risk of the child uncovering himself. Better than a parka, a jumpsuit will provide much more coverage if the feet are closed. Since the baby doesn’t walk, the feet don’t need to be removable. This way, you will save your child from the cold and allow him to keep his feet warm. On the other hand, its material must be warm, so avoid polyester pilot and unlined suits.

Take care to choose it with a hood, lined, padded feet, windproof and waterproof, with a whole front opening.
